Ferret Cages & Carriers

Cages:

We went through many different types of cages. Some of them were just awful and a few were worth the expense. Each has pros and cons in my opinion. Here are my top picks:

The Super Pet Ferret Kingdom, FerreTrail MultiFloor Fun-nel Home and Super Pet Deluxe Care Home:

Pros: I like several things about these cages. You can arrange the ramps and shelves however suits you and your ferret. And they come out easily for cleaning. There are also 4-6 doors so no matter where your ferret goes, you can always get a hold of him. It’s also on wheels so rolling it out to vacuum under it is nice. You can also take away a level or add a level with the purchase of an additional kit as well as get accessories for ferret fun. The ramps are all made of grooved plastic, so the hazard of feet getting stuck or slipping and falling are virtually non-existent.

Cons: While you can disassemble this cage for storage, the clips to take it apart and put it together are approaching nightmare status. Several of them broke and my fingers were extremely sore when it was all said and done. But if you’re not planning on assembling more than once or twice, it’s a good choice.

The Ferret Nation Habitat:

Pros: Full width door opening. This make cleaning and getting ferrets out so much easier! You can swing up the locking ramps for separating areas of the cage if needed. It’s on wheels and has a shelf underneath for supply storage.

Cons: The ramps are metal with spaces between the grooves, which can cause little ferret feet to get hung up causing possible injury. After several years of using this type of ramp, we did have a couple of hang ups, but no actual injury.

The Ferret Playpen:

Pros: This is my absolute favorite cage. I love the space in this cage as well as the way the entire cage comes apart for cleaning. Just unclip and lift it off to pull out the pan, wipe it down and set the cage back on and clip secure. It is also on wheels. And instead of clips holding the panels together it just collapses and fits into the bottom pan for easy storage.

Cons: Just as the above cage, the ramps are metal with spaces between the grooves, which can cause little ferret feet to get hung up causing possible injury. After several years of using this type of ramp, we did have a couple of hang ups, but no actual injury.

Carriers:

What we have found most useful in a carrier is that it was easy to clean (our ferrets always made a mess in the carrier at the vet!) and that there are multiple points of entry/exit. A top opening is a huge plus. It’s no fun trying to get a freaked out ferret out of the only exit, usually the front, to get vaccines! The plastic carriers are easiest to clean and the soft carriers seem to keep the ferret slightly calmer due to the coziness. The ferret stroller is great because it is usable in 3 ways: a carrier, a stroller and a car seat.

Marshall Front Pack Carrier:

This product was a necessity for us! I took at least one ferret almost everywhere I went in this bag. He was always so comfy in there he often curled up and slept for the ride. Highly recommend it! It features a top and front vent for air movement, pockets on either side for food and water, a zippered top for easy access and a sturdy bottom. Available in cozy fleece material or durable nylon.
